WAYNE’S RUN: A JOURNEY OF HOPE FOR FOSTER CARE
Meet Wayne Curran, a local hero from Kempsey whose inspiring journey will soon be the talk of the Central Coast. On Friday, June 20, Wayne will lace up his running shoes and embark on a monumental 494-kilometre run from Kempsey Court House to the iconic Sydney Opera House. But this isn’t just any run; it’s a heartfelt mission to raise awareness about the struggles of children in foster care and the critical need for support for their carers.
Wayne’s story is one of resilience and transformation. His early years were marred by violence and abuse, leading to a tumultuous journey through the foster care system. By the time he was six, Wayne was already considered “damaged goods” by Child Welfare Services. The group home that took him in struggled to find him a permanent foster placement, resulting in a cycle of instability and further trauma.
As a teenager, Wayne battled anger and sadness, turning to alcohol as an escape. This led to years of re-offending and time spent in correctional facilities. However, a rehabilitation program planted a seed of hope in Wayne’s heart. He discovered running, which became his sanctuary and a path to recovery. Running offered him a way to channel his energy positively and rebuild his life, both physically and mentally.
Now, Wayne wants to give back. His upcoming run aims to shed light on the foster care system and advocate for better support and resources. Joining him on this incredible journey is Pat Farmer AM, the Australian Adventurer of the Year, along with local runners, volunteers, and Member for Oxley, Michael Kemp, who will be available for comments.
The run will commence at 9:30 am on June 20 from Kempsey Courthouse. Wayne’s route includes stops in Port Macquarie, Coopernook, Forster, Bulahdelah, Raymond Terrace, Toukley, and Ettalong, before reaching Sydney on June 27. Along the way, Wayne plans to visit local AOD rehabilitation centres and hostels to share his story and inspire others. (Dates: Toukley 25 June, Ettalong June 26, Sydney June 27)
Wayne’s message is clear: the foster care system needs improvement, and with the right support, every child can thrive. He hopes his run will not only raise awareness but also spark meaningful change. Wayne’s journey is a testament to the power of resilience, hope, and the human spirit.
As Wayne takes on this incredible challenge, he needs the community’s support. By coming together, we can help Wayne make a difference in the lives of foster children and carers. Join us in supporting Wayne’s run, and let’s drive positive change for foster care together.
Mark your calendars and cheer on Wayne as he runs for a brighter future. For more information and updates, stay tuned to the Central Coast Chronicle.
